Nestled in the village of Petris, Salbek Castle is a true architectural gem with a rich and fascinating story that begins in the early 19th century. Built by the noble Salbek family, of German and Hungarian origin, the castle stands out with its neoclassical style, grand proportions, and refined architectural details.
With two floors, 24 rooms, and a total area of around 1,000 square meters, the castle was constructed using fired brick. It features flat ceilings, rhombus-patterned floors, and elegant Doric sandstone columns adorned with sculpted cherubs. A graceful semicircular staircase leads to the upper level, where the room layout hints at their use as the private apartments of the noble family.
The castle was rebuilt and expanded into its current form after the 1784 peasant uprising, at the command of György Salbek, a prominent noble of Arad County. Although damaged during the 1848 revolution, it was quickly restored. Over the years, the estate changed hands multiple times before eventually being taken over by the state and repurposed as a school and boarding facility during the communist era.
Today, Salbek Castle remains a proud symbol of aristocratic elegance and the turbulent history of the region—an unmissable destination for anyone passionate about architecture, history, and cultural heritage.
