What possible connection could there be between the famous Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and a small commune in Hunedoara County, Romania? The answer may surprise you: the Museum of Textiles in Baita, a one-of-a-kind institution in Eastern Europe, home to an impressive collection of over 12,000 textile pieces and tools from around the world, gathered over four decades by the Zaharia family.
The museum's mission is to preserve, collect, research, and share its collection with both specialists and the general public. A central focus is placing Romanian and Eastern European textiles within a global context, encouraging their recognition and appreciation as works of art. The museum also serves as a hub for research and professional exchange, connecting experts and emerging professionals from both Romania and abroad.
More than 1,800 items in the collection were donated by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where Florica Zaharia, PhD in textiles and Conservator Emeritus, worked for over 30 years, including 13 years as Head of the Textile Conservation Department. Her deep passion for textiles, combined with remarkable expertise, is now carried forward by her children, Ana Teodora Dragus and Romulus Nicolae Zaharia.
The Museum of Textiles invites you into a fascinating world of fibers, patterns, and woven stories from across the globe. Discover the hidden meanings in the geometry and craftsmanship of fabrics, and allow yourself to be enchanted by this extraordinary collection. Book your visit and step into a world where textiles become art.
