Located near the village of Crisan in Ribita commune, this monastery is named after the birthplace of Gheorghe Crisan, one of the three leaders of the 1784 peasant uprising in Transylvania. It was originally founded in the second half of the 16th century, supported by the Orthodox communities of Vaca (today Crisan) and Ribita.

The monastery remained active for nearly 200 years, until the late 18th century, when it was affected by religious tensions of the time. It was last mentioned in 1772, after which it gradually fell into ruin.

Archaeological excavations in the early 1990s uncovered and preserved the remains. In 1992, the monastic life was revived after more than two centuries. A new church was built, dedicated to the “Nativity of the Virgin Mary”, along with a summer altar, monks' quarters, and other auxiliary buildings.

Today, Crisan Monastery is a peaceful retreat and a spiritual and historical point of interest for visitors.
